How to Cope?

Small mundane things may bother you a little and problems of grave consequences may upset you, make you feel quiet, alone and hurt.

There are many ways to redefine your focus in life. How can you regain perspective and understand that bad things can happen to good people and the idea is to emerge from them, to learn from them and not be afraid or worried to tackle them, full-on.

Stress rarely goes away when we push it to the backburner; however one must also not blow it out of proportion, just because it has been on our mind for a long time. Sometimes all one needs to do is to stop thinking about whatever is bothering us for a while and then revisit it again, with a fresh mind. Crisis management, conflict resolution, counseling and relaxation techniques all form a part of coping with stress.

Coping with stress

Coping with stress means the ways and means you adopt to keep stress at manageable levels; bring about certain changes in yourself, so that you perceive the stressor as not so threatening, or find ways to convert it into a motivating or driving force.

Many people are always fearful about the consequences of an action and prefer to stay in a rut and be miserable, rather than take the risk of bringing about changes to cope with the stress. Think positive!

Problem solving techniques

How we perceive a situation and how we react to it is the basis of our stress. If you focus on the negative aspects of any situation, you can expect high stress levels.

When confronted by a situation try to break it down into smaller fragments like:

  • What is bothering you?
  • Is this a very important thing?
  • How often are you thinking about it?
  • Does it need to be addressed?
  • Does it have a specific issue that can be tackled separately?
  • Is some aspect of it causing greater anxiety than others?
  • What will you do?
  • When will you do it?
  • Who else is involved?
  • Can you do it with less effort?
  • Can you do it differently?
  • Will your action hurt someone?
  • Can you do anything to change the unpleasant situation?
  • How will this impact your future decisions?
  • What can you learn from this experience?

This will help you to identify the problem, devise possible solutions and even understand the real reasons why it becomes difficult to resolve or even approach. It then becomes simpler to chalk out a plan of action and thereafter make choices that are the most rational, practical and desirable.

This approach helps you to take some time out before you jump into a problem. The tendency is always to resolve a problem as soon as it arises and with long-standing issues, there will be pent-up frustration.

It is not always possible to maintain distance with problems. The only solution is to embrace the challenges that you face with a ready enthusiasm. It is also unlikely that those who you think have been unjust or have unfairly put you in the situation are entirely to blame.

Making peace with unforeseen circumstances is one of the ways to lay fears to rest. Some people are just labeled as the “nervous-type” and taking on tensions even when they are not really there. By asking the questions above, you will just clarify to yourself whether the issue at hand is really worth all the trouble and mental attention.
