- Maida and suji are devoid of fibre. Fibre is important for the intestines. Fibre also slows the absorption of carbohydrates preventing blood sugars from rising.
- They also increase triglyceride / lipid levels in the blood.
- It has a tendency to acutely increase plasma glucose levels i.e. in that sense, maida acts like sugar.
- When the fibre is removed, essential vitamins, anti-oxidants and minerals are also removed from the grains.
In addition, most maida foodstuffs are fried and are high in salt and calories, for example bhatoora, mathri, samosa, kachori. Even the dough of these foodstuffs contains oil. So, for all practical purposes, it is high calorie food with salt. Many of these confectionaries are made in trans-fats which are also every harmful. |
