Health measures in the canteens should include
- Hygiene maintainance.
- Quality of fats and oils should be monitored.Liquid oils rather than trans fats should be used.
- Use of iodinated salt.
- Seasonable cheap and uncut fruits can be sold or served,
- There should be no carryover of the left over food to next day.
- Use of whole grains and pulses whenever possible should be encouraged.
- Use of colors, preservative and additives in the food prepared should be banned.
- Avoid junk foods like burgers, chowmein, chips, samosas, cold drinks.
- Introduce freshly made vegetable pulao, idli dosa, rajmah chawal, flavoured milk, fresh lime juice, juices etc instead of junk food.
Attractive pictorial stickers which communicate nutritional messages, on food items/sections and glorify foods with healthy components can be used which can be put in sections selling foods with predominantly healthy components. Attractively made, short, real-time promos and posters can help in reinforcing the health messages in the canteen.
The unorganized sector is very different, and the problems are much more severe and less amenable to implementation of policies and standardized interventions. The best strategy is such situations would be to create the desire and the demand from the top as well as bottom, through the responsible active media, social networks, Non Governmental Organizations, Labour Unions etc. |
